Gwinnett Family Chapter

The Gwinnett Family Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Georgia was formed in June 2015 to provide a vehicle through which the blind and interested sighted persons come together in the Gwinnett County and surrounding areas to encourage independence and self-confidence to improve the quality of life of the blind.  Chapter meetings provide assistance in strengthening nonvisual techniques to remain independent, share advocacy skills, educate on legislative issues that affect the blind, and resources and information about the latest accessible adaptive aids and technology to help remain independent while receiving the Support and fellowship of their peers.  Our Education & Outreach Services provides the public with information about the misconceptions and lack of information which exist about blindness through our sensitivity training workshops and we advocate for our right to be inclusive in our community along with our sighted peers.

Fundraising Goals:

Establish a Transportation Grant for blind residents of Gwinnett County in areas due to limited or no public transportation to attend monthly meetings.  Transportation and Community Involvement is one of the biggest challenges for the blind and impede their participation in life activities which leads to isolation, loss of independence and even depression.

TLC (Tools for Living With Confidence Kit - Funding to provide newly blind individuals with a few small basic aids/devices with audio speech and tactile touch to maintain essential skills to continue daily activities.

Scholarships to attend the NFB National Convention which is the premier event for training, support, and information for the blind community.  The convention participants learn and network with members, family, teachers, professionals, employers and various agencies for the blind.  The convention is a  life changing event and members return empowered, ready to take on leadership roles and a  more understanding that blindness does not have to hold them back.
